I'm not much for large crowds, but...

I DO like attending festivals and gatherings like Bele Chere!  Carol and I attended Asheville's annual party and festival this past Saturday and had a great time despite the nasty heat and humidity.  I've been told by the few folks I know around here who actually grew up around here that...well... folks who are from around here don't go to Bele Chere.  Being the glutton for punishment that I am I always inquire...Why Not? The answers I get vary anywhere from dislike of crowds to dislike of crowds of tourists and anything in between.  However many I know who don't attend don't like KIND of people who attend... drunkards, liberals, hippies, yankees...I think you get the picture.
I happen to think it's a great opportunity to engage with people who different from us (although you'd be surprised at how many folks like us I run into there...shhh...don't tell anyone, I was sworn to secrecy!). Jesus called us to engage the world in which we live because, whether we like it or not, he loves it and especially them! We are the agents in which he chooses to use in order to reach them with the message of grace, love and transformation through a relationship with him.

By the way...I didn't notice as many of the usual 'turn or burn' types yelling at people and getting up in their faces about how God's gonna rain hell on them if they don't get themselves together and begin to act like them. Maybe I caught them in a lull.  I did however see one lone individual who was across the street from Pack Square, right accross the street from where I've always seen the obnoxious and I believe destructive 'turn or burn' types.  He was alone and he was holding a sign... For God So Loved the World...John 3:16.  I didn't get the chance to talk with him but I've gotta think God was smiing on him...because that's just the message that we who are his followers need to continue to make known to the world we live in... and God so loves...!  kmo
